Why does the checkout matter?
It’s important for you to consider the two classes of membership apps available on Shopify today: those who use the Shopify Checkout, and those who don’t. Today, the only membership apps which do use Shopify’s Checkout are Simplee Memberships and Conjured Memberships.
Why are different checkouts used?
Until November, 2020, Shopify did not allow its apps to use the Shopify Checkout for recurring payments. This is why apps like ReCharge and Bold Subscriptions created their own checkouts, and why Bold Memberships and AAA Memberships also use their own checkout. Bold and AAA decided not to build a custom checkout, but to use basic checkouts by Stripe and PayPal.
Why is this important?
Because customers must purchase memberships using a custom form embedded somewhere on your store, the customer experience is fairly bad. Here are some of the reasons why using the Shopify Checkout is better:
- You can sell memberships using existing Shopify products. This means you can use the same product page as all your other products, track inventory, sell the membership as a digital good, optionally collect shipping information from your customers, etc…
- Customers can purchase their membership along with any other products in your store. This means that instead of selling a membership alone, then requiring customers to come back for other products, they can add memberships with any other products from your store in a single cart!
- You can leverage existing Shopify emails when the order is generated, and the order will reflect that it is a membership product
- You can use Shopify discount codes for your memberships – whether you want to discount the first order, or the entire membership, Shopify discount codes have you covered!
- You can use Shopify’s automatic discounts to offer discounts on memberships when specific criteria are met
- Your Shopify analytics will show all membership orders
- The overall experience is simply better for customers
